BACKGROUND:
If we were living two thousand years ago, and Jesus walked into the room;
and sat down; and we spoke to him; and he spoke back... WE WOULD BE TALKING TO GOD.
This most intimate and important subject is discussed in these studies.
And the errors of the 'Early Church Fathers' are demonstrated.
Ultimately we must agree that:
Jesus Christ is God, manifest in the flesh, according to the scriptures.
This is an important question.
It goes to the heart of how we decide with whom to have fellowship.
Please read this long answer very carefully.
I am a Christian because of my God-given faith in my Lord and my God, whose name is Jesus Christ.
Being a Trinitarian (or not) is never a test for fellowship in scripture. Therefore, those who use it as a test are using a non-scriptural idea to measure their own brethren.
Here are the facts that can easily be confirmed by your own study:
A man called Tertullian (born 160 AD) persuaded the fledgling Roman Catholic organisation to accept the idea of a Trinity. You will notice that when the Trinity was first invented (read 447 Against Tertullian) the early Christians were STARTLED to hear the idea. Yes, STARTLED! And it was Tertullian himself who said so.
This point cannot be overstated. Tertullian himself admitted that his ideas startled the majority of Christians. That is what he said himself. Please read his words yourself, and think about the serious implications of that fact. If you were living just after the Apostles, and a man spoke about the Godhead in a way that startled you, and startled all the Christians you know, how should you react? You had not heard of such a thing from those who knew the men who knew the Apostles. [Remember, there was only just over 100 years from the last Apostle (John) to when Tertullian penned his invention. That is, from 99 AD - 213 AD., being 114 years.]
Now if Peter, Paul, and James and John had never heard of a Trinity (and they hadn't) then how is it that belief in a Trinity is counted as grounds for disfellowship by some?
The fact that most denominations follow the Roman Catholic Church regarding the Trinity, and how we should meet, is simply a shame upon them.
My faith is that God was manifest in the flesh, as the man Jesus Christ. God was in Christ Jesus reconciling the world to himself. That is never in dispute amongst Christians. But how he did that; how God was manifest in the flesh, has been disputed since Tertullian. My view is that we need to look to Christ for the answer, and not add Persons to the Godhead as did Tertullian. And Tertullian was followed by Romanism, and then by the Orthodox organisations, and finally by the Denominations.
Thank God it is not necessary for us to accept Roman Catholic teaching. There is a more excellent way.
Please read the various studies regarding the deity of Christ, who is our Lord and our God. And I accept every man who confesses that Jesus Christ is his Lord and Saviour, whether that man is a Trinitarian or not.
Trinitarians, however, do not always accept me as their brother. I trust that you will judge for yourself as you read the various studies, whether, or not, I have the Spirit of God, and therefore whether, or not, I am your brother in Christ Jesus. Judge for yourself if you can be a Christian without being a Trinitarian.
Harry.
Also, you might give thought to this:
There are Christian Trinitarians, and non-Christian Trinitarians. That is, there are Christians, and there are religious members of Romanism and Orthodoxy. There may even be non-Christians attending a local denomination who also confess that God is a Trinity. So how is it that no man can say Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost? (1Cor 12:3) Do we say that non-Christians are speaking by the Holy Ghost? Or is there a serious and widespread error in our general understanding about God? Are we obeying scripture; or are we inheriting error from Tertullian, Romanism, Orthodoxy and the Denominations?
Finally,
Non-Christians never say what I believe, nor what those with whom I have fellowship believe.
And that fits with the scriptural saying: no man can say Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost.
And the good news is that later in his life Tertullian joined a group that believed just as we do now. Praise God.
May the Lord bless you in your studies.
We are Christians because we believe Jesus is the Lord.
We can say, by faith, that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh. (1Tim 3:16)
But exactly how God came as a man gives us some issues to resolve.
The 'Early Church Fathers' settled upon adding Persons to the Godhead.
But is there a more excellent way of understanding the deity of Christ?

About an hundred years after Christ, a man called Tertullian wrote extensively about the Trinity.
Tertullian said that Christians were startled to hear about this change to the Godhead.
The Roman Catholics believed Tertullian's doctrine; the Orthodox Church accepted it;
the Denominations inherited it. And you heard it from them. But is it right?
Is the doctrine of Tertullian without error?
Tertullian wrote extensively, therefore he deserves an extensive answer.
Here it is (206 pages)

But for those who find 447 difficult to read (and it is) here is a document
with all the same major points, but omitting Tertullian's diatribe.
The same points in doctrine are made, but it is so much easier to read them.
